Rumors surrounding Neil Gaiman gay affairs have been circulating online for a while. Perhaps due to his rocky relationship or the queer characters in his works, he often finds himself amid these accusations.
English novelist Neil Richard MacKinnon Gaiman is known for writing screenplays, comic books, graphic novels, audio plays, and short stories.
He is most known for writing the comic book series, The Sandman. But his other popular books are Good Omens, Stardust, Anansi Boys, American Gods, Coraline, and The Graveyard Book.
Throughout his career as a novelist, Neil Gaiman has received several awards; Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker medals being some of them.
He also became the first author to receive ‘Newbery’ and ‘Carnegie awards’ for The Graveyard Book (2008).
In 2013, The Ocean at the End of the Lane won the title ‘Book of the Year’ in the British National Book Awards. Later, it was transformed into a highly regarded stage production at London’s Royal National Theatre.
No, Neil Gaiman Gay Rumor Is Not True!
Speculations about Gaiman’s sexuality might have risen due to his non-traditional relationship with his long-term now ex-wife, Amanda Palmer.
The information available, however, is evident that the Neil Gaiman gay rumors are baseless.
In an interview, Neil Gaiman said,
“The people in the (signing) lines, I would be starting to meet more and more LGBT people who were just not the kind of people who would ever read comics, but they were finding Sandman, and they were finding themselves in Sandman.”
Furthermore, he said that it was huge and appreciated the support from Queer community.
Before getting hitched to singer Amanda Palmer, Gaiman married Mary McGrath. The two tied the knot back in 1985.
Despite her husband earning fame through his line of work, not much is known about Mary as she did not want to be in the limelight.
He was quoted saying that his wife was happy being the mysterious figure in the background.
The couple has three children together, one son and two daughters. After 22 years of togetherness, the duo called it quits in 2007.
Gaiman started dating his most recent wife, Amanda Palmer, in 2009. The duo got married in 2011, and after 11 years of marriage, they decided to separate.
A lot of what Gaiman has written includes queer characters. After Gaiman’s The Sandman’s Netflix adaptation premiere, he revealed that queer characters were important to the story.
According to him, the queer characters were an attempt to create a world that reflected his own. This statement was like fuel to Fire for the Neil Gaiman gay assumptions.
However, he clarified his statement saying a lot of his viewers and readers belong to the LGBTQIA+ community.
The people in the (signing) lines, I would be starting to meet more and more LGBT people. They were finding Sandman, and they were finding themselves in Sandman.
Neil Gaiman believes that it is important that more characters are queer as it creates inclusion. He concludes that it creates a reflection of the real world.
Neil Gaiman’s Relationship with Amanda Palmer
Neil Gaiman and singer Amanda Palmer got into a romantic relationship in 2009. Some years later, in 2011, they got married.
However, their marriage was not like any traditional relationship. They had an open relationship in the earlier days of their matrimony.
Though unconventional relationships are common these days, when the two announced their unique situation, the world had questions and their supposition.
Being openly involved in sexual relationships with others despite being in the holy matrimony with Palmer raised whispers in Neil Gaiman gay gossips.
Both Gaiman and Palmer have openly talked about their open marriage and have revealed that they had ‘rules.’
They accepted that society called their bond eccentric but swore it worked for them.
Sadly things changed when the duo had a baby in 2015. Soon after the birth of their son, Anthony ‘Ash’ Palmer Gaiman, they realized that open marriage did not work as a family.
Gaiman made headlines in 2020 when he traveled 11,000 miles to his house on the Isle of Skye, breaking COVID lockdown guidelines, while Palmer and their son, Ash, were in New Zealand.
He confessed that the couple found themselves in a ‘hard place,’ he left as they mutually decided they needed some space.
In November 2022, the couple shared the news about their separation via social media.
Despite not being married, they have decided to co-parent their son to give him a loving home.
