Willie Perry Jr., renowned by his stage name DJ Casper, was an American DJ, hype man, and songwriter.

“Perry’s first hit, ‘Casper Slide Pt. 1,’ famously known as ‘Cha Cha Slide,’ found its roots in Perry’s heartfelt intention to compose a song tailored for his nephew.

His nephew’s role as a personal trainer at a Bally Total Fitness facility in 1998 inspired Perry to create a captivating track that later became a widespread sensation.

With the song’s rise as a popular aerobic routine in fitness clubs and schools’ PE classes, Casper released a sequel in 2000 titled “Casper Slide Pt. 2.”

This song caught the attention of Elroy Smith at Chicago’s radio station, WGCI-FM.

Hailing from Chicago, he earned the nickname “Casper” for his consistent on-stage appearance in all-white outfits.

He gained fame for his energetic performances and musical contributions. Sadly, he succumbed to death while battling cancer.

In April, he provided an Instagram update, revealing his upcoming performance at the Popworld Festival in Leeds, UK, scheduled for August.

In a statement by ABC7 after his passing, Perry urged cancer fighters to defy the disease’s influence, highlighting his famed creation, the Cha Cha Slide.

In an episode of Orange Is the New Black’s sixth season, Perry makes a cameo as a DJ in Crazy Eyes’ fantasy, where prisoners and guards dance to the Cha Cha Slide.

Casper stood as a cherished gem of Chicago, crafting one of the most renowned line dances in history, all while staying rooted in his origins.

During an interview with ABC7, Casper acknowledged health struggles but pledged to maintain positivity and treasure each instant.

He even embarked on a tour alongside James Brown until a cancer diagnosis disrupted his journey.

In January 2016, Perry Jr., also recognized as DJ Casper, was diagnosed with kidney and neuroendocrine cancer.

After a surgery that proved ineffective, he turned to chemotherapy for treatment, and by July 2018, he revealed his remission in an interview.

In 2019, Perry celebrated overcoming liver and kidney cancers, viewing his health journey as a transformative divine intervention to embrace a slower pace of life.

Despite remission, his cancer resurgence eventually led to his passing.
